An Adobe Illustrator Structure

Posted by ddrees on August 5, 2008

I 51 am trying to figure out a honeycomb like structure in illustrator to let fish inhabit for the fish series. There are lots of ways a user can combine the tools in Illustrator and Photoshop to produce forms that no one has tried yet. The programmers keep adding functions but they do not explore them all for possible use. In mixing tools you sometimes discover bugs but you also discover cool stuff or shall we say the results of applying algorithms or processes. In this case I have a pre-visualized idea of what I am seeking but sometimes you find things by serendipity.

Blends in illustrator are intriguing. You can make blends between lines, shapes, multipart shapes, colors, gradients and various combinations of these.

You can blend two items at a time, three or four. Available Ram determines the top number I suspect.

People use blends to generate parts for animations.

There is a natural affinity for vector blends and animations. In Flash it is called tweening.

But Illustrator can make some very complex tweens.

I am trying to combine a line blend with the 3D extrude tool. I am getting closer but need to figure out more controls.

I want it to look like a cross between corals, honeycombs and apartment blocs – for fish to live in.
